Sometimes I catch myself leaning harder into stressful environments as an unhealthy way of reconnecting with that old trauma because in a way, it’s all I’ve ever known. The entertainment business has created in me a Stockholm syndrome that tells me I will only ever feel comfortable when existing back in that old place of emotional chaos and stress. Social media and most especially Twitter are prime examples of places that bring back those old patterns, and often I will find myself logging on even when I know I shouldn’t—even when I know it will fill me with dread, extreme anxiety, or unnecessary stress. But those feelings have been the foundation on which I have built my infrastructure, so they are familiar to me, and in that familiarity, I find ease in returning to them, however toxic they sometimes are. That’s why it’s so important for us to create better boundaries with environments that can cause our bodies to fall back into recognizable relapses and why it’s so necessary to keep doing the work to literally rewire our brains so that they have options when they go into fight mode—not just the one protective option of self-sabotage and shutting down. As my dear friend Amy Poehler says, “It’s important to create your own austerities before life does it for you in a mean-ass way.” Preach, Poehler. By “austerities,” she means new patterns of healthy behavior, ways of standing firmly for what you believe in and not letting people steer your moral compass for you. And that “mean-ass way” usually reveals itself in the body by taking control when we will not, a power struggle between the mind and the body that can come with some serious repercussions. We have to learn to create boundaries for ourselves. To step back from people and spaces that harm us, whether they intend to or not. Because what we absorb affects the functionality of our physicality. And we must take the best care of every part of us, especially now, in this time of existential wildfires.
Because this world needs you. I need you.
